I. Is It Still True?                                   I Corinthians 15:1-11

   A.  By whose authority?

1.  “For what I received, I passed on to you as of first importance” … (v. 3).
   a.  This is not an opinion or a theory that Paul developed. It is the revelation and tradition that is to be received and passed on.
2. “For I am the least of the apostles” … (v. 9).
a. Paul has the commission and authority of an apostle, a commission received directly from Jesus (v. 8 – … “last of all … he appeared to me also”).
b. Verse 11 – “Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach …”

B. In a nutshell.

1. By this gospel you are saved (v. 2).
2. Stray from it and your ministry and life is vanity (v. 2).
3. Christ died for our sins (in fulfillment of the prophetic Scriptures), he was buried, he was raised on the third day (v. 4).
4. He appeared after the resurrection to great numbers of witnesses including the apostles who were commissioned to pass on his teaching (vv. 5-8).

C. A required response.

1. Don’t latch onto any other gospel (v. 2).
2. Don’t forget that this was the good news preached to you (v. 1), that saved you (v. 2), and to which you committed your life (v. 11 – “this is what you believed”).

D. So, is it still true?

1. Just as was the case in 1st century Corinth, today there are a number of other gospels out there.
2. Is the Word of God still the God breathed word of the authoritative apostolic witness (see II Timothy 3:16-17)?
3. As Paul suggests, we, too, are what we are by the grace of God (v. 10) and we, like him, have believed (received and committed ourselves to) this gospel. If we no longer hold firmly to it, we have believed in vain.
