Sermon Notes
I. Observing a Holy Lent: Resisting Evil - I Corinthians 10:1-13

A.  The historic example – The Israelites in the wilderness.

 1.  They were given every spiritual benefit.

a. Verse 1 – all under the cloud and all passed through the sea (the equivalent of being baptized).

b. Verse 3 – all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink from the rock that was Christ.

2. But …. God rejects most of them because their hearts were set on evil things (v. 6).

a. They were set on idolatry (v. 7).

b. They were set on wild behavior, indulging in eating, drinking and revelry (v. 7).

c. They were set on sexual immorality (v. 8).

d. They were constantly testing Christ (v. 9).

e. They were grumblers (v. 10).

B. A warning for us who have received the special gift of God’s salvation in Christ (verse 11 – those “on whom the culmination of the ages has come”).

1. Focus on standing firm (“be careful”) so you don’t fall (v. 12).

2. A promise for the battle (v. 13) – God will not let you be tempted beyond your ability (“what you can bear”) …. he will provide a way out so you can endure.
