Sermon Notes
I. Observing a Holy Lent: Confessing Our Faith                           Romans 10:8-13

A.  As we join Jesus and the disciples on their journey to Jerusalem and the cross, we have the opportunity to listen to the voice of God and to grow in holiness.

B.  This journey to Jerusalem is a rescue mission.
1. The rescue mission was announced by the prophets and began at Bethlehem, will do its most decisive work in the events at Jerusalem and continues to this day.
2. For those who desire to be rescued and, subsequently, become coworkers in the ongoing mission of the kingdom, it is crucial that we understand “the message concerning faith that we proclaim” (v. 8).

C. The context for these words of Paul is his ongoing concern for the salvation of the Israelites.
1. They have chosen to reject the Christ because they have committed themselves increasingly to be rescued by works through the law (Romans 9:32).
2. Instead, if they would recognize their need to pursue the law by faith, they would discover that Christ is the “culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes” (Romans 10:4).

D. Our confession of faith that leads to our salvation (v. 13) is not a rigid formula, but an acknowledgement of what Christ has done for us and in us through grace.
1. Verse 9, therefore, should not be used as a singular proof-text or tool to determine or achieve one’s salvation. Instead, it must be seen, used and understood in relation to the rest of the scriptures.
2. Two affirmations (vv. 9-10).
a. What comes from the inside (the very core of our existence) is of the utmost importance … “believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead” (v. 9) …” For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified” (v. 10).
b. Verbal confession and proclamation are essential, not optional … “If you declare with your mouth” (NRSV – “confess with your lips”) (v. 9) … “and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” (v. 10).
b1.   Compare Psalm 107:2a – “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so” (NIV – “tell their story”).

E.  As we travel with Jesus to Jerusalem in this Lenten season, may we grow in holiness through the deepening of our faith and our desire to proclaim it as an act of love.
