Sermon Notes

I.      Futile Faith                                      I Corinthians 15:12-20

A.  You can’t have one without the other (vv. 12-14).

1.   The horse – the resurrection of Christ.
          a.    Apostles Creed – “On the third day, he arose again from the dead.”

2.   The carriage – the resurrection of the dead.
          a.    Apostles Creed – “I believe in …. the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.”

B. If there is no resurrection ….

1. The proclamation of the apostles is a misrepresentation, spoken in vain and a fraud (vv. 14-15).

2. If the resurrection cannot be believed, neither can the fact that Christ died for our sins. We are not forgiven (v. 17).

3. Verse 18 – If Christ is not risen, then the Christian dead are merely ashes and dust – “lost”.

4. Paul’s conclusion.
a. “Your faith is futile” (v. 17). “We are of all people most to be pitied” (v. 19).

C. “But Christ has indeed been raised” …. (v. 20).

1. Do we believe it? Or are we like a bunch of kids building a seemingly permanent snow house in a temperate climate?
